According to the World Health Organisation, suicide is the 13th leading cause of death worldwide. In Hong Kong, approximately 777 suicide deaths were recorded in 1997, with the number increasing to nearly 1000 in 2001. Suicide is the leading cause of death among youths and elderly suicide is about two to three times that of the general population. Prevention of suicidal behaviour is a major public health target for the HKSAR government. This Centre aims to produce evidence-based suicide research with the goal of developing and implementing effective suicide prevention programmes and strategies.
The inauguration ceremony will be officiated by Dr E K Yeoh, Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Bureau, Mr Simon S O Ip, Steward, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, and Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor. A lecture, entitled “US Air Force Suicide Prevention: Translating Universal Prevention Strategies for Special Populations” delivered by Colonel David Litts of the US Air Force, will follow the inauguration ceremony. HKU to launch Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention

With the financial support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and the Chief Executive's Community Project List, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) is to launch the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention at an inauguration ceremony on October 17, 2002.
