This annual award presentation ceremony represents HKU's commitment to recognizing and rewarding good teaching and research. The Outstanding Researchers Awards comprise four categories, viz, the Distinguished Research Achievement Award, the Outstanding Researcher Award, the Outstanding Young Researcher Award and the Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award. Four teachers from various departments will receive appointments as University Teaching Fellows.
On the same occasion, the University gave its recognition to Professor John Leong of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor Vivian Yam of the Department of Chemistry who are members of the University newly elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“We appreciate the good performance of individual teachers, we also firmly believe in importance of teamwork,” said Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, the Vice-Chancellor in his opening address. This year, the University has therefore not only show recognition to individuals but with reference to its Excellence in Education Quality Work Award, a new and special award to five academic units for having demonstrated their high level of commitment to quality teaching and learning, has displayed equal emphasis on collegial effort and collaboration.
Dr Victor Fung, the Chairman of the Council in his closing remarks that the University of Hong Kong asserted that the University has the teaching and research capabilities to win public and private support for its mission to create an institution capable of competing at the highest international level.

HKU Holds Award Presentation Ceremony for Excellence in Teaching and Research

A total of 24 distinguished staff members and five academic units of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) were given awards today (November 4, 2002) in recognition of their outstanding achievements in teaching and research at the Award Presentation Ceremony for Excellence in Teaching and Research 2002. Dr Victor Fung, Chairman of the Council and Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor of HKU officiated at the Ceremony.
