Until now mobile devices have not been able to use the leading PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) standard for data encryption because they simply have not had sufficient processing power, or battery life. To achieve its goal of providing the same level of security for m-Commerce as in the wired world, ETI has developed end-to-end secure links between the handheld device and the e-shop or e-bank handling the transaction. At the same time, ETI has overcome the limited resources available on a typical mobile phone or PDA – typically equipped with a very small processing unit and battery reserve – in order to implement SAFE CONNECT, a CPU-intensive cryptographic PKI solution.
The launching ceremony will be attended by Professor C F Lee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the University of Hong Kong, Ms Cordelia Chung, General Manager, IBM China/Hong Kong Limited, Mr Stephen Chau, Chief Technology Officer, SmarTone Mobile Communications Limited and Dr. Nam Ng, Director, Computer Centre, The University of Hong Kong. Details of the launching ceremony are as follows:
Date :December 4, 2002 (Wednesday)
Time :10:00 am
Venue :Wang Gungwu Theatre, Graduate House, The University of Hong Kong
Members of the Press are cordially invited to attend. For further enquiries, please contact Ms Polo Leung of HKU's External Relations Office, at 2859 2600.
