Professor Jao Tsung-I has generously agreed to donate a collection of his works and books to the University of Hong Kong. In view of the volume (over 20,000 volumes) and value of the collection and, above all, the eminence of Professor Jao, the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole will serve as a gallery as well as a center for related research studies.
The establishment of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole is a joint effort between various parties within the University, including the Libraries, the University Museum and Art Gallery, the Department of Chinese, and the Department of Fine Arts. The ceremony will also commemorate the establishment of "Lim Por Yen Academic Fund" in support of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole.
In his address, Professor Lap-Chee Tsui praised Professor Jao's excellence as an internationally renowned scholar in painting and calligraphy. He also thanked Mr Lim Por Yen for the establishment of the "Lim Por Yen Academic Fund".
Dr Patrick C P Ho, Secretary for Home Affairs, said that the establishment of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole in a modern university like the University of Hong Kong would, on one hand, preserve Jao's works and books and, on the other hand, act as a center for international exchange.
The ceremony was officiated by Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, HKU's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jao Tsung-I, Dr Patrick C P Ho, Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr Li Ka-shing, Chairman of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd, Mr Lim Por Yen, Chairman of Lai Sun Group, Mr Chan Wai Nam, President, Federation of HK Chiu Chow Community Organizations, and Professor C F Lee, HKU's Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Director of Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole.

A ceremony to celebrate the opening of Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole and the launching of The Collected Works of Jao Tsung-I was held today at the Wang Gungwu Lecture Hall, Graduate House, the University of Hong Kong.
