Professor Edward Chen Kwan-yiu gives the Inaugural Lecture of Edward KY Chen Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Edward Chen Kwan-yiu today (June 15) spoke at the Inaugural Lecture of the Lecture Series named in honour of him, established by his Economic students from early 1970s.
At the inaugural lecture of the Edward K Y Chen Distinguished Lecture Series held by the School of Economics and Finance of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Professor Chen spoke on From the NIES to the BRICS: Development Theory Revisited.
The "Edward K Y Chen Distinguished Lecture Series" was initiated by a group of former HKU students of Professor Chen from early 1970s as an accolade to a fine scholar and loving teacher. Its Executive Committee includes Mr Jack Lee (Convenor), Mr Ambrose Cheung, Mr Vincent Kwan, Mr Kant Kwong, Mr Frederick Ma and Mr Edward Yau.
A fund was set up to establish the Lecture Series at HKU in Professor Chen's honour. Not only does this Lecture Series represent a tribute to an honoured teacher, it also aspires to demonstrate the fine traditions of great respect and appreciation for Teachers and Mentors ("尊師重道") to generations to come. The Lecture Series will be held annually.
The Lecture today was followed by a dialogue between Professor Chen and alumni representatives. Alumni representatives included: Mr Henry Fan, Mr Antony Leung, Mr Frederick Ma (as Moderator), Miss Janet Wong and Dr Wan Kam Ming.
Professor Edward Chen is currently the President of Lingnan University and is an alumnus of HKU. He had his first and second degree at HKU and his doctorate in economics at Oxford University. From 1979 to August 1995, he was the Director of the Centre of Asian Studies and a Chair Professor in 1986 at HKU. He is the Honorary Professor and Distinguished Fellow of the Centre of Asian Studies at HKU, Honorary Professor of Shantou University, and Visiting Professor of Jinan University. He has held visiting appointments at Yale, Oxford, Stockholm Universities and the University of California (Davis Campus), and served as a member of Time magazine’s Board of Economists. His research interests focus on economic development problems in general and with special reference to the Asian newly industrialized economics. He also has extensive experience in the commercial sector.
