HKU Vice-Chancellor honoured by University of Aberdeen
13 Jul 2007
Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), has, within a month, added two honorary doctorate degrees to his roll of international acclaims. He recently received an honorary doctorate of science from The University of Aberdeen in Scotland, in recognition of his distinguished achievements in medical science. In mid-June, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by the University of Toronto. At the graduation ceremony of The University of Aberdeen, Professor Tsui was conferred Doctor of Science by Lord Wilson of Tillyorn, Chancellor of the university and former Governor of Hong Kong. Founded in 1495, The University of Aberdeen is one of the oldest medical schools in Europe, having established the first chair of medicine in the English-speaking world in 1497. While it has invested heavily in medical research, it also has a well-established reputation for nurturing world leaders in the medical field. HKU and Aberdeen University have been close partners in medical studies and exchanges for some years. Medical and dental experts of both universities have collaborated on different research projects, and mutual academic exchanges of teaching staff and students are on the rise. Collaborative medical research projects in recent years have been mainly in the areas of cancer; public health; heart, brain, hormone and healthy ageing; infection and immunology; as well as reproduction, development and growth. These two honours are the latest addition to the numerous awards and honours Professor Tsui has received for his outstanding work. His honours include the titles of Distinguished Scientist of the Medical Research Council of Canada, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Fellow of the Royal Society of London, amongst others. In addition, he was awarded honorary doctoral degrees by the University of King's College, the University of New Brunswick, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, St. Francis Xavier University, York University, Tel Aviv University and The University of Toronto.
