HKU holds Inauguration Ceremony for New Students
12 Sep 2012
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (September 12) welcomed its new students to the University at the Inauguration Ceremony.
This year, two sessions were held to welcome students enrolled in the three-year and four-year undergraduate programmes respectively. A total of over 7,000 new undergraduate students have been admitted into various programmes this academic year.
Today’s ceremony was officiated by HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui. Mrs Margaret Leung was the Guest of Honour to address students enrolled in the three-year curriculum, while Ms Mable Cheung was the Guest of Honour to address students in the four-year curriculum.
Professor Tsui welcomed the new students in his inauguration address. He introduced HKU as a place having a free, open and diverse learning environment. He encouraged students to take part in activities and enjoy university life, and said learning experience both inside and outside classroom is important.
“We believe that university education is a total learning experience…..Through these activities, I hope that you will discover abilities, potential, strengths, and ambitions in yourself that you had not noticed before either.”
He said HKU students are expected to be leaders of their chosen field and leaders of society. In this regard, they need to exercise their independent thinking and be critical.
“You have a responsibility to make a difference for everyone and to help create a better tomorrow for humankind. Freedom of intellectual thought and personal expression are things that HKU has always stood for. You have to learn to respect others, respect differences in opinion and appreciate diversity.” He added.
Other HKU family members who delivered welcoming address at the Ceremony are Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Albert Chau, Chairman of Convocation Mr. Choi Sau Yuk, Clerk of Convocation Mr John Wan and President of the Hong Kong University Students' Union Mr Dan Chan Koon-hong.
