HKU Vice-Chancellor Selection Committee meets to kick-start the selection process

The Selection Committee for the 15th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), comprising 11 members and representatives from all major sectors of the campus community, held its first meeting today (July 3) to kick-start the selection process and to discuss matters of procedure and protocol relating to the selection exercise. It has received a report from the Search Committee and will proceed to review the suitability of the candidates identified.
Dr Leong Che-hung, the Chairman of the Selection Committee, said: “The Selection Committee provides broad representation of the HKU community, as evidenced by the fact that nine out of 11 members are elected from among staff, students, alumni and Council members.
“I look forward to working with the Committee members to identify the best candidate to lead the University and further build its academic excellence, research accomplishments and global standing,” he remarked.
The Selection Committee comprises 11 members:
- Chairman of the Committee and HKU Council Chairman, Dr Leong Che-hung
- Two lay Council members, represented by Mr Paul M Y Chow (lay Council member on the Search Committee) and Mr Lester G Huang (elected by the Council)
- One Faculty Dean (elected by the Faculty Deans among themselves), represented by Professor L P Samaranayake
- Three full-time professorial Teachers (elected from their own cognate Faculty grouping), represented by Professor Lo Chung Mau (Medicine and Dentistry), Professor Yang Dan (Engineering, Science and Architecture) and Professor Gary Biddle (Arts, Social Sciences, Education, Business & Economics, Law, and including The Kadoorie Institute and the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities & Social Sciences)
- One full-time non-professorial Teacher or academic-related staff member (elected from among their own number), represented by Dr W L Wong
- One alumnus/alumna (elected by Convocation), represented by Mr Man Cheuk Fei
- One full-time non-academic staff member (elected from among their own number), represented by Dr Victor K M Chan
- One full-time student (elected by undergraduate and postgraduate students), represented by Mr Laurence Y L Tang.
