VP(R)'s Picks: Breakthrough in Understanding Quantum Metals
The “high-temperature” superconductivity of metals holds great promise for enabling highly efficient energy transportation, but it requires extremely cold temperatures that are currently too costly and energy-intensive to replicate. A better understanding of quantum critical metals themselves is needed. New research from Dr Meng Zi Yang in the Department of Physics and his collaborators takes us closer to overcoming this challenge.

VP(R)'s Picks: A Breakthrough in Stem Cell Technology
Embryonic stem cells generally are established from pre-implantation embryos made up of dozens of cells called blastocysts. But HKU scientists have managed to capture stem cells from embryos much earlier in the development process. Moreover, they have achieved this for multiple animal species such as mice, humans and pigs. The research opens up wide new avenues for science investigation, translational medicine and biotechnology.
