Such a trend poses challenges to the existing system. General schools and special schools, which have for many years clearly defined and separate responsibilities, are beginning to come to grips with the shift in service paradigm and the shared responsibilities of special educational needs. Teachers are being challenged with problems and demands they have hitherto been unfamiliar with and which they may lack the professional training to effectively manage.
Is inclusive education the future direction of special education? How is diversity in learning effectively addressed in the curriculum and in the classroom? How should we prepare and equip our teachers to take on the new roles? What part do the stakeholders in the community play in this process of reform?
An international conference, entitled "Reform, Inclusion & Missions: Towards a New Era of Special Education" and organized by the Centre of Advancement in Special Education, the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), will address the above issues. Six scholars of international repute, who come from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, China, and Taiwan, are invited to give keynote speeches on a number of important topics in special education. In addition, many local and overseas delegates will share their professional experiences and insights in forum, workshops, seminars, paper presentation, roundtable and exhibits, including an Open Forum on the development of special education in China from leaders in special education from the Mainland.
The Conference will take place from June 2 to June 3, 2006, from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm at the Rayson Huang Theatre, HKU. Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice Chancellor of HKU and Mrs. Betty Ip, Principal Assistant Secretary of the Education and Manpower Bureau will officiate the opening ceremony at 9:00 am on June 2
Members of the media are cordially invited to attend. For enquiries, please contact Ms Alison Li at 9353-4411 or Mr. Andrew Tse at 9304-4439 of the Centre of Advancement in Special Education
In search of a new mission and direction in special education – HKU holds an international conference in special education
01 Jun 2006
Special education is undergoing significant changes in recent years in Hong Kong and elsewhere around the world. Under the world trend of inclusive education, whereby no child should be denied of education opportunities and learning environments that are being enjoyed by his peers, more and more students with learning difficulties and disabilities are being included in general schools. Such a trend also calls for an educational system that does not discriminate differences in sex, race, socio-economic backgrounds and learning abilities and prompted education reforms in many countries to develop systems and curriculum that address diversity in learning.
