Efficient Learning and Teaching of Chinese Characters for Children Press briefing to release survey findings
29 Mar 2012
There have been three major problems of memorizing, writing and pronouncing Chinese characters. Some children hate learning Chinese language because of these difficulties. Parents and teachers in Hong Kong are concerned about how children start to learn Chinese characters and how the curriculum of children's education should be planned and implemented.
Professor Tse Shek Kam, Director of Centre for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research (CACLER), Faculty of Education, HKU, has been devoted to the study of learning Chinese characters for years. He has recently started the research project related to efficient learning and teaching of Chinese characters for children and the development of competence in reading and writing Chinese characters which aims at helping children to learn Chinese characters joyfully and efficiently, training them to read and write Chinese characters and thus facilitating the acquisition of good reading and writing skills.
The project is sponsored by Quality Education Fund. The teaching programme of Chinese characters has been implemented and the survey has been conducted to find out the current situation of learning and teaching Chinese characters in the kindergartens in Hong Kong. The research project is completed successfully.
