Press Briefing on Implementation of NSS Liberal Studies Curriculum: A Comprehensive Study
29 Jun 2012
The implementation of the New Senior Secondary (NSS) academic structure has commenced at Secondary 4 since September 2009. As stipulated in the New Academic Structure for Senior Secondary Education and Higher Education: Action Plan for Investing in the Future of Hong Kong (2005), Liberal Studies (LS) becomes one of the core subjects in the NSS curriculum. With the completion of the three-year education, students of the first cohort have just finished the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE). To track the implementation of this subject over the 3-year cycle of the first cohort, it is an ideal time for revealing the progress made at the school level.
The Faculty is conducting a project to study the implementation of the NSS Liberal Studies curriculum in the schools of Hong Kong “Implementation of NSS Liberal Studies: A Comprehensive Study”. 65 schools have participated in the first phase questionnaire survey. Purposes of the survey include:
- to review how the NSS Liberal Studies Curriculum is implemented in schools;
- reveal what have been achieved over the last three years of implementation ; and
- identify issues and concerns of teachers and schools during the implementation.
From the 365 returned questionnaires, the Faculty can collect the views of teachers on the usage of learning and teaching materials for Liberal Studies, textbooks and the school-based materials they produced, the LS assessment issues, the guiding principles for LS curriculum and instructional design, and their worries and achievements, as well as the school policy on LS curriculum. A seminar will be organized to report on the preliminary findings of the project, and to share the concerns and experiences, particularly the successful experiences in implementing this newly introduced subject.
A press briefing session will be held to release the findings of the survey. Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the press briefing, with details as follows:
