HKU Science and Art Crossover One-day Programme – Visualizing Science via Creative Lens & Interactive Art for Secondary School Students
Science and art, intertwined yet pole apart, were the twin dynamic components in the cultural development of any civilizations. However, people often merely consider their polarity, which leads to the partitioning of curiosity, inquiry and knowledge into specialized compartments. The lack of holistic views in science and art leads to cultural stagnation. Some artists and scientists have sought freedom from specialized compartments and definitions by pursuing larger cultural questions, removing their isolating disciplinary blinders. Many illustrations were indeed mathematically inspired and carried many hidden formulae and patterns. Those who appreciate science in artistic sense can see the beauty of science in a different aspect.
Dedicated to promote science literacy to the community and nurture our younger generation's interest in science, the Faculty of Science of the University of Hong Kong organized the Science and Art Crossover Project. The project basically comprises two parts, a one-day programme to be held on January 26, 2013, followed by an exhibition of completed artworks. The one-day programme aims to visualize science in an artistic and interactive manner, of which our science and engineering professors will deliver interesting science talks, and our art experts will offer free hands-on Science and Art crossover workshops to junior secondary school students.

The Faculty of Arts Celebrates its Centenary with a Thought-Provoking Work by Digital Artists OpenEndedGroup
The Faculty of Arts is celebrating its 100 Year Anniversary with an exhibition that unites the past and the future in a thought-provoking work by digital artists OpenEndedGroup. Founded in 1912, Arts provided a home for a number of departments which are now located in other faculties, including science, education, and social studies. This digital installation invites us to think anew about the interconnectedness of these disciplines by creating a work that references literature, music, cinema, philosophy, and the history of science. It also challenges us to explore the new spaces of the Centennial Campus and reflect on the tremendous benefits the arts and humanities bring to our lives and the places we interact in.
Public Talk and Opening Reception
Date: January 29, 2013 (Tuesday)
Time: 6:00 pm
Venue: CPD-LG.07, Centennial Campus
Marc Downie and Paul Kaiser of OpenEndedGroup will discuss their work and their use of software and capture technology.
Exhibition Details
Date: 28 January to 6 February 2013
Venue: Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre Foyer, Centennial Campus
The Exhibition will feature two excerpts from the OpenEndedGroup’s work Upending, which takes the form of 3D cinema. Ordinary objects, spaces, and bodies are probed and queried from unfamiliar perspectives. The play of images is accompanied by a recording of Morton Feldman’s first String Quartet by the FLUX Quartet.
OpenEndedGroup is comprised of three digital artists – Marc Downie, Shelley Eshkar, and Paul Kaiser – whose pioneering approach to digital art frequently combines three signature elements: non-photorealistic 3D rendering; the incorporation of body movement by motion-capture and other means; and the autonomy of artworks directed or assisted by artificial intelligence.
The OpenEndedGroup installation is curated and designed by Dr Eric Schuldenfrei of the Faculty of Architecture. This event is held as part of the Faculty of Arts Centenary Celebrations and is generously supported by the HKU Culture & Humanities Fund.

Faculty of Arts Holds Exhibition Opening and Memorial Gathering for Professor Leung Ping-kwan (Yesi)
The "Good Company: Leung Ping-kwan's Hong Kong" Exhibition commemorates the work of our city's foremost literary voice, Yesi, who sadly passed away on January 5, 2013. The exhibition is inspired by Leung Ping-kwan's collaboration with 10 artist friends and communicates their shared vision of Hong Kong. Five of the exhibits have not been shown before.
Poetry and literary creation were central to Yesi's life; so was friendship. The exhibition shows how friendship and poetry can nourish each other, displaying the author's poems alongside his friends' photographs. It also offers a bibliographical survey of Leung Ping-kwan's work in three genres - poetry, prose, fiction – from earlier to more recent times. The exhibition, held as part of the Faculty of Arts Centenary and co-organized by the University of Hong Kong Libraries, will run from 30 January to 1 March 2013.
The Opening Ceremony for the exhibition will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, 30 January 2013. The Dean of Arts, Professor Kam Louie, University Librarian, Mr Peter Sidorko, and Professor Elaine Ho of the School of English will officiate at the Ceremony.
