The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Dragon Boat Team paddled their hearts out to capture the overall championship title in the intercollegiate dragon boat competition, the premier local dragon boat event for university students organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China and co-organised with the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association.
Students from eight tertiary institutions participated in three main events, the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Championship competitions which were held at Hong Kong Dragon Boat Association Training Center in Shek Mun on 4 March 2023.
The HKU Men’s Dragon Boat Team showed a very strong performance which earned them the Men’s Championship title. Both the Women’s and Mixed Team also showed top results fighting their way to 1st Runner-up position in respective Championship events. The consistent strength of the HKU Dragon Boat Team, under the tutelage of Coach Kwok Moon Hing, resulted in the HKU Dragon Boat Team attaining the highest team score leading to the overall championship title.
“We are very proud of our HKU athletes, who have performed really well after a 3-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and they continue to train regularly with dedication and deserve the remarkable results and recognition,” said Dr. Michael Tse, Director of the Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE).
CSE offers good training opportunities to athletes on skills and tactical development via dedicated coaches, as well as professional level strength and conditioning support at HKU’s B-Active fitness centre. The HKU Dragon Boat Team is committed to the regular weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays dragon boat training in Aberdeen and conducts Strength and Conditioning at HKU B-Active on Fridays to augment their physiques in the gym.
“I am pleased with the commitment and performance of the team and the leadership of the women’s and men’s team captains, Kristy Tsang Sik Kiu and Xavier Lee Chak Yin”, remarked Willie Hung, CSE Team Advisor for dragon boat team and convenor of the Dragon Boat Championship event.
CSE also supports the physical, social and personal developments of athletes and general students via a host of specialized activity programs, including UniSports, UniAdventure and Exercise is Medicine on Campus and other student and staff physical activity opportunities.
