I wish to express my appreciation to colleagues, students and alumni of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), as well as those from different sectors of community for their concern. I would like to issue this brief statement on the recent events in relation to HKU.
All 24 members of HKU Council and the Registrar received various anonymous complaint emails since last Wednesday evening (September 27). Professor Zhang Xiang as President and Vice-Chancellor, being an ex-officio member, also received those anonymous emails.
There is at HKU established policy and procedures for handling “whistle blowing” ( https://www.hku.hk/about/policies_reports/whistleblowing.html ). As Council Chairman, I decided to call a special meeting for last Friday (September 29) to discuss how to handle the anonymous complaint emails. Since a certain number of members were unable to attend, the meeting has been rescheduled for next Monday (October 9).
HKU Council will handle all complaints fairly, impartially and seriously in accordance with HKU’s established policy and procedures based on facts.
If an investigation is conducted, the parties concerned may exercise their rights, including seeking legal advice and making representations.
In light of privacy and relevant legislation, HKU will generally not make comments publicly on specific personnel matters.
HKU has a long and illustrious history, and we are grateful for the staunch support we have received from society for over a century. The Council of HKU, as the supreme governing body of the University, will handle this matter in the most serious and responsible manner, so that we can meet the high expectations of society.
Once again, my sincere thanks to you all.
Priscilla Wong
Chairman, The Council of The University of Hong Kong
