The joint research scheme was established in 1999 by NSFC and RGC of Hong Kong. It aims to promote collaboration between researchers in Hong Kong and the mainland on the basis of complementing existing strengths of both sides. The priority areas under the Scheme are: information technology, life science, new materials science, marine and environmental science, Chinese medicine and management science.
All applications for the Scheme are joint research projects of Hong Kong and mainland researchers. A Joint Selection Committee, comprising representatives from the RGC and the NSFC, will conduct a final assessment of the applications. The annual funding of this Joint Research Scheme are HK$10 million from RGC and RMB5 million from the NSFC. The Hong Kong and mainland partners of the supported projects receive funding from the RGC and the NSFC separately, and the grant can only be used in Hong Kong and the mainland respectively.
