Attached is an open letter from Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), to his colleagues, students and alumni, giving his views on league tables.
In his open letter, the Vice-Chancellor said that HKU, as a comprehensive research-led international university, had enjoyed unparalleled success in Hong Kong and remained competitive at the highest international level. He also pointed out that HKU had demonstrated its strength in categories as follows:
- the quality and qualifications of the students admitted;
- the positive comments and commendation on our educational quality;
- the number of research grants and the amount of research funding secured by our academic staff;
- the number of refereed publications in peer-reviewed journals;
- the leadership positions assumed by our graduates, and their contributions to the cultural and socio-economic development of the community; and
- the cosmopolitan nature and the quality of our staff and students.

The media has recently produced a league table, ranking Hong Kong's eight tertiary institutions. However, we have found that the methodology, data sourcing and analysis used in the ranking are questionable.
Attached is an open letter from Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), to his colleagues, students and alumni, giving his views on league tables.
