Students of HKU's Faculty of Business and Economics Won Three Victories in a Month
03 Apr 2004
Three teams of students from the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Hong Kong won championships at open competitions, last month. Their innovative ideas, outstanding performances and excellent presentation skills have brought honour to themselves and the University.
"We enjoyed an invaluable experience from the preparation for the competition …. the challenges gave us the opportunity to explore and understand the real business world, something we cannot learn from textbooks," said Raphael Hui Man-wai after he and his teammates brought home the Most Innovative Award at The Queen's Entrepreneurs’ Competition (QEC), a leading business plan competition held in Canada with undergraduate participants from all over the world.
His words also reflect the philosophy of the Faculty and the University – nurturing leaders for society by all sorts of means inside and outside the classrooms.
The team's project, Travelogue, provides instant, free and personalised information to tourists through mobile technology. Up-to-date information on hotel bookings, sightseeing tips, shops, restaurants, special events etc can be offered to tourists visiting Hong Kong through SMS technology. Apart from winning the award, students were greatly inspired by some of the Canadian competitors who have already launched the business, applying their knowledge and ideas to actual practice.
Another team beat students from ten universities in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou at the ACCA Centenary Inter-Tertiary Competition with their outstanding marketing strategy. Team member Gary Liu Zheng also won the Best Presenter's Award at the competition.
Competing against more than 300 teams from Hong Kong, the 3rd HKU team won the Golden Award at the 4th HSBC Young IT Entrepreneur Award. The championship idea solves the headache of queuing at banks, restaurants etc by using IT technology. The team won the Golden Award by making sure that their idea is practical and user friendly.
