Millions of personal computers sit idly on desks and in homes worldwide. During this idle time, the mysteries of science and space continue to elude us. What if each of the estimated 650 million PCs in the world could be linked to focus on addressing the world's most difficult health and societal problems?
Launched by IBM in 2004, World Community Grid is a global humanitarian effort to create the world's largest public computing grid to address the most challenging global issues. It will harness the vast and unused computational power of the world's computers and direct it at research designed to help unlock genetic codes that underlie diseases, improve forecasting of natural disasters and support studies that can protect the world's food and water supply.
Leveraging grid computing infrastructure resources, IBM demonstrates its commitment of using its technology expertise to contribute to the community. The company is pleased to welcome the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to join as its first partner of World Community Grid in Hong Kong. The collaboration will encourage HKU's students, staff and alumni to bring together their collective PC power to conduct important health and environmental research.
You are cordially invited to attend the press conference hosted by Timothy Cheung, General Manager, IBM China/Hong Kong Limited (IBM) and Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor, HKU. Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Christine Fang, will attend the event as honorable guest to show appreciation and support to IBM and HKU for this meaningful initiative.
