Facing the challenges of climate change in Hong Kong
09 Dec 2006
Global warming is affecting Hong Kong where the hottest October and November in the last 100 years were just recorded. A recent study by the Hong Kong Observatory predicts a warming of 3 degrees celisus over the next century. A change of this magnitude will impact all aspects of life in Hong Kong, from water and food supplies, to public health and biodiversity. Yet research on the regional impacts of climate change has had a low priority in Hong Kong in comparison with other countries in the region.
The University of Hong Kong has identified climate change as one of its strategic research themes and organized the "Living in a warmer world: climate change and Hong Kong" workshop on 11th and 12the December 2006. The workshop attempts to discuss the potential impacts of the changes on various aspects of life in Hong Kong and to produce a research agenda for future investigations into the impacts of global climate changes in Hong Kong an southern China. Over 20 local and international professionals will speak at the workshop, including Mr CY Lam from the Hong Kong Observatory, Ms. Christine Loh from the Civic Exchange and Professor Sun Kwok from the Faculty of Science of the University of Hong Kong.
Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the workshop. The details are:
