Japan Month 2007 at HKU: Traditional Japanese Inns and their Great Female Managers
16 Apr 2007
Japan Month at HKU 2007 kicked off on April 3 2007 with a mini-concert of Japanese traditional music with Koto and Shakuhachi. It continues at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) with the visit by a group of renowned "Okami-san" on Friday April 20 2007.
Okami are the female managers of ryokan, traditional Japanese inns. Nine okami-san from nine celebrated inns across Japan will hold two events at the Global Lounge, G/F, Fong Shu Chuen Amenities Centre, Main Campus of HKU. This is their second visit after their highly successful events at HKU in April 2006.
In the first session, "Staying at Ryokan (感受日本的傳統旅館)" between 12:30-2pm, Okami-san will share their daily responsibilities and give advice on how to make the most of a visit to a ryokan and its facilities, such as hot springs.
Okami-san not only manage their ryokan, but are often responsible for keeping many cultural traditions alive. In the second session, "Kimono Workshop (和服穿著示範與體驗)" from 4:00-5:30pm, they will demonstrate how to put on a kimono.
The above two events are jointly organised by the Department of Japanese Studies in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and the Office of International Student Exchange of HKU, and sponsored by Japan Airlines.
Members of the media are welcome to attend the above events. In addition, a press session with the Okami-san will take place at the Global Lounge on the same day from 3:30 – 4pm.
