The Faculty of Engineering of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) was presented prizes and awards to over 200 outstanding students and teachers in recognition of their achievements and excellence in research and teaching last Saturday (November 29). It is a record number of recipients for the Faculty's annual Prize Presentation Ceremony.
Ir. Peter Y Wong, President, The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers was the Guest of Honour to present medal and certificates to 73 students winning faculty-based prizes and HKU Foundation Entrance Scholarship.
HKU Deputy-Vice-Chancellor and Provost Professor YC Richard Wong presented awards to 108 students who have won external prizes.
During the ceremony, 21 teachers who have made outstanding achievements in research and teaching will be honoured. They have won the prizes awarded by academic and professional bodies of Hong Kong, Mainland, Britain, Canada, Australia, Finland, Switzerland and the United States. These include the Elected Fellowship awarded by the Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom to Professor Joseph Lee, who is also the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of HKU; and the Doctorate of Science awarded to Professor Alfonso Ngan by The University of Birmingham, UK.
Professor WC Chew, Dean of Engineering thanked the teachers who have made tremendous effort in offering the best education to HKU students and have contributed to the community at large. He told that the world of the future would rest in the hands of engineers and Engineering would continue to be in high demand globally with the restructuring and diversification of economy. "Our Faculty is committed to enhance students' multi-disciplinary endeavors so that they can embrace the challenge and opportunities of globalization and knowledge-based economy, and serve as global leaders," said Professor Chew.
"The introduction of double-degree programmes, more inter-disciplinary programmes, and the common admission in this academic year are means to sharpen the competitive edge of students with training and knowledge of other fields on top of engineer expertise," he said.
Under the common admission scheme, fresh students admitted to the Faculty only needed to decide on their majors after the first semester. This provided them greater flexibility and wider choices before entering into a specialty.
