To celebrate the Centenary next year, HKU debuted its "HKU 100 Mooncakes", these are to be shared with all University staff, students, alumni and friends. To extend the happiness, for every box of moon cakes which is sold, a senior citizen will receive a gift pack of low-sugar moon cakes, fruits and tea leaves. HKU Volunteer Team will visit 2,000 elderly on September 18 (Saturday) and September 19 (Sunday).
HKU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor S P Chow acted as an ambassador on the University's behalf to visit and present the moon cakes and gift packs to senior citizens today, together with the President of Hong Kong University Alumni Association Mr Tse Sik Yan and two students, Stephanie Wong (BBA[Law], year 3) and Martin Tam (BSc[Surveying], year 3). The visit was arranged by SAGE Tsuen Wan District Elderly Community Centre.
Professor Chow is a doctor who always participates in volunteer work. He previously volunteered with Medecins Sans Frontieres in Haiti for two weeks and considers it as a rewarding experience. "Being a volunteer is always a rewarding experience. It is great to have the chance to extend the happiness of Moon Festival to our senior citizens. Despite all despair that I encountered during different services, there was always hope when I saw the smiles on the faces of the people we served."
