The Annual Meeting of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)/Technical Committee 106 (TC 106) Dentistry concluded successfully in Hong Kong last week after its closing plenary session.
The meeting was held in Hong Kong from 20 to 25 August 2017 at the main campus of the University of Hong Kong. It was hosted by the Innovation and Technology Commission, and organised by Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong (HKU). More than 300 representatives in dentistry from over 20 member economies and organisations in liaison with ISO joined the meeting. They also attended the welcoming reception on 20 August and the gala dinner on 23 August.
“International standardisation enhances world connectivity and facilitates global trade and technology cooperation. The ISO/TC 106 Meeting is an important platform for standards development where experts in dentistry from all over the world come together to share knowledge and experience, and explore opportunities for cooperation. Hong Kong is committed to driving innovation and technology development, facilitating research collaboration as well as promoting the adoption of international standards. It is our great honour to host this very special and important meeting in Hong Kong," Ms. Annie Choi, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, said.
The development of international dental standards is important to assure the quality and safety of products used in dental treatments and by the general public. This time the ISO/TC 106 meeting produced a very fruitful discussion that contributed to about 60 international dental standards.
Professor Chu Chun-hung, the Associate Dean (External Relations) of HKU Faculty of Dentistry, added, “We are highly honoured and pleased to have the opportunity to organise the ISO/TC 106 international meeting. We hope our dedication and commitment can enhance the health and safety of dental consumers around the world. I am expecting new international dental standards to be born for improving patient safety, and ensuring the quality of dental materials and oral care products.”.
The ISO/TC 106 Dentistry, currently having 44 member economies with various sub-committees and working groups, has published 175 ISO standards.
Ms. Annie Choi, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, delivered a welcoming speech at the gala dinner.
