HKU launches various scholarships to support aspiring students to realise their dreams
07 Jul 2020
This year has been full of challenges for Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) students. In order to reward students who have worked tirelessly on securing the best possible grades throughout the pandemic and performed well in the examination, HKU is proudly launching a series of academic scholarships providing a host of new opportunities for high achieving students.
HKU Aspiration Scholarships: HKD40,000 per student
Eligible programmes
- Bachelor of Arts (BA)
- Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS)
With the many uncertainties faced by DSE candidates, students this year may need more time to explore their interests and ambitions. This scholarship aims to give students the chance to see which majors they wish to pursue in the BA or BSS.
Rather than indicating the major at the JUPAS qualifying stage, students can take pre-requisites in the first year to enable them to discover their interests more fully, before selecting the major in the second year of studies. This will give students more freedom and less pressure in choosing the right major that appeals to their interests and aspirations.
HKU REACH (Recognition of Achievements) Awards: HKD20,000 per student
Eligible programmes
- Bachelor of Nursing (BNURS)
- Bachelor of Social Engineering (BSW)
- Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Language Education)-English Education (BA&BED(LangEd)-Eng)
- Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Language Education)-Chinese Education (BA&BED(LangEd)-Chin)
- Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education and Special Education) (BED(ECE&SE))
- Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science (BED&BSC) and Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Social Sciences (BED&BSS)
Society’s demand for health care and education is increasing. This scholarship encourages students to enrol in courses related to health care and education, and to make a positive contribution to the health and education prosperity of the community.
HKU Future Leaders of the Year (FLY) Scholarships 2020: HKD20,000 per student
Eligible programmes
- Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc)
- Bachelor of Arts (Applied Artificial Intelligence) (BASc(AppliedAI))
- Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (Design+) (BASc(Design+))
- Bachelor of Arts and Science (FinTech) (BASc(FinTech))
- Bachelor of Arts (Global Health and Development) (BASc(GHD))
This scholarship is designed for students who are interested in enrolling into one of the five BASc programmes, which are focused on the study of interdisciplinary theory and practice, and who aspire to enter the start-up industry and make their mark in the future. Successful students will receive HK$20,000 to use as a start-up fund or to engage in start-up-related activities. In addition, students will have the opportunity to seek guidance from HKU tutors, alumni or entrepreneurs in "iDendron", HKU’s dedicated centre for innovation and entrepreneurship. They will also have priority in participating in activities organised by HKU, and internal and external institutions for entrepreneurs, such as masterclasses, professional lectures, luncheons and workshops, thereby accessing the entrepreneurial community earlier and working on their original ideas through exchange as well comprehensive start-up support tailored for them.
A platform for students to develop their dreams
Professor Bennett Yim, HKU’s Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange, said: "In an era where information is at your fingertips, it is more important to know how to integrate creativity and innovation. With the support of the HKU FLY Scholarship, the innovative ideas put forward by talented students can be more easily realised, thereby creating a positive impact on the community and offering value to society."
The three new scholarships have been specially set up for this year’s HKDSE candidates, and have no quota: HKU will offer as many scholarships as there are worthy students. Applications will be considered based on students’ HKDSE scores, extracurricular activities and other factors, and all current HKDSE applicants who successfully enrol onto their respective programmes and meet the scholarship requirements will receive a scholarship.
