HKU welcomes the positive measures made by Chief Executive Mrs Carrie Lam in her Policy Address 2020. We are pleased that the Government has recognised the strength of Hong Kong universities in having strong Research and Development (R&D) capabilities. It is encouraging that the Policy Address has identified joint development with Shenzhen to become an international Innovation and Technology (I&T) hub in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and in providing more resources for co-operation in modern service industries, education, nurturing of talents and youth exchanges etc,. Such opportunities will certainly give rise to closer collaboration between enterprises and higher education institutions in technological and scientific research.
As a leading global university, it is HKU's top priority to recruit the best scholars from around the world, especially in emerging fields like I&T. As such, the University is delighted with the Government’s commitment to nurture talents, with the introduction of the new Global STEM Professorship Scheme for a period of five years at an estimated cost of $2 billion to attract overseas I&T talents to take part in scientific research and innovation activities of local higher education institutions.
We also welcome measures like the GBA Youth Employment Scheme and the Funding Scheme for Youth Entrepreneurship in GBA which will help create more sector-specific job opportunities for young people graduating in recent years.
