Operating under the dual authority of the Ministry of Research and the Ministry of Industry in France, the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA) is a renowned research institute in information technology, particularly strong in image processing and multimedia research. There are 2000 researchers and an annual budget of 600 million francs from the government and industry. The Institute focuses on basic and applied research in the area of information and communication science and has been very successful in spinning off startup companies.
At the initial stage the INRIA - HKU collaboration is to set up an INRIA-HKU Joint Research Centre to provide a framework to facilitate joint research and development. With such a framework, researchers from INRIA and HKU are encouraged to initiate R&D projects based on their interests. The Joint Research Centre can also take advantage of the mainland China links that HKU has established. The recent establishment of two Innovation Centres with the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of China, the China Innovation Centre for Information Technology and the China Innovation Centre for Drugs Development, at HKU can be an asset to the INRIA-HKU collaborative projects.
A workshop where researchers from INRIA and HKU will present their projects and research plans for familiarization and initial discussions will be organised on the following day (April 7), after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between both parties.
At the ceremony, Professor Ian Davies, Vice-Chancellor of HKU and Professor Bernard Larrouturou, President of INRIA will sign a memorandum of understanding. Mrs Carrie Yau, JP, Secretary for Information Technology and Broadcasting and Mr Jérôme Pasquier, Consul-General of France will be the Guests of Honour.
The signing ceremony will be held on Friday, April 6, 2001 at 2:00pm in Room 218, Main Building, the University of Hong Kong. Reporters / photographers are cordially invited to attend. For further enquiry, please contact Miss Polo Leung at HKU's External Relations Office at 2859 2600.
