The University of Hong Kong and the International Studies Association are co -organizing the Convention – the first ever meeting in Chinese territory of this prestigious event.
The International Studies Association (ISA) has its headquarters in the U.S. but an international membership of 3,200 scholars and policy makers whose work focuses on the study and practice of international relations. The ISA is the largest association of its type in the world. Its members come from sixty-one nations, representing virtually every major university in North America, Europe, Japan, and Korea. ISA has been in existence for forty-two years, and its annual meetings draw the largest collection of international relations scholars around the world. ISA international conventions are high-profile and prestigious events. The University of Hong Kong is co-organizing the Hong Kong Convention with ISA, the first ever convention held in China and in collaboration with nine other co-sponsoring associations.
The Hong Kong convention will be between July 26-28, 2001. The convention's broad theme is "Globlization and Its Challenges in the 21st Century". Altogether about 700 scholars from over forty countries and territories will present research papers in nearly 200 panels during this three-day event. The University of Hong Kong is a co-sponsor and also serves as the local host.
The idea for this convention began five years ago when the ISA took the initiative to create the first international relations conference ever in conjunction with scholars from mainland China and Hong Kong. It is a rather large effort and the ISA and University of Hong Kong are joined by these other co-sponsoring organizations:
The British International Studies Association;
The Central and Eastern European International Studies Association;
The Chinese Research Association of International Relations;
The Israeli International Studies Association;
The Japan International Studies Association;
The Hong Kong Political Science Association;
The Korean Association of International Studies;
The Nordic International Studies Association;
The Portuguese International Studies Association;
The Russian International Studies Association
In 1996, the ISA held a joint convention in Makuhari, Japan. The formal cooperation of the Japanese government helped tremendously in the success of this meeting, which included a major foreign policy address by the Japanese Prime Minister. In 1998, the ISA convened a joint meeting with the association's European counterparts in Vienna and, through the Austrian government's support, this event was hosted by the Mayor of Vienna and its plenary address was given by the High Commissioner of the European Union. London, Mexico City, and Acapulco had also served as host cities on previous occasions. The decision by the ISA to hold this year's convention in Hong Kong is based on a number of reasons, including the importance of the city and its unique position as both a Chinese and a World City.
Both the University of Hong Kong and the ISA feel strongly that at a number of levels, this convention will prove to be a highly dynamic and important meeting, of benefit to the study of international relations in general and to the promotion of scholarly exchange in mainland China, Hong Kong, the Asia-Pacific region, and globally.
Members of the press are welcome to attend the conference at the University of Hong Kong Town Centre in Admiralty Centre by registering with the Conference organizers at the School of Professional and Continuing Education at 3/F, Admiralty Centre.
