HKU and Shenzhen sign two agreements on hospital and technological collaborations

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Lap-Chee Tsui represented the University to sign two Memorandum of Understandings with the Shenzhen authorities today (November 30) . The two MOUs are "HKU Teaching Hospital in Shenzhen collaboration agreement" and "Shenzhen Innovation Circle Innovation Technology Collaboration Agreement". The signing ceremony was witnessed by Mr Henry Tang Ying-yen, Chief Secretary for Administration; Mr Wang Rong Mayor of Shenzhen and HKU Council Chairman Dr Leong Che-hung.
According to the MOU on the hospital project, HKU will be working closely with the Shenzhen authority in the planning of the Binhai Hospital, which will be the largest public hospital in Shenzhen in future, with 2,000 beds. The hospital is intended to be developed into a world class teaching, research and healthcare services institution in China. Participation in the project will enable HKU to consolidate and enhance collaboration with the Shenzhen counterparts on hospital management, medical teaching and clinical practice. The diversified clinical cases and pathological resources of the Binhai Hospital will provide valuable resources for the advancement of the teaching and research of HKU, enabling HKU to contribute the healthcare reform in China.
The "Shenzhen Innovation Circle Innovation Technology Collaboration Agreement" will enable HKU and the Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau to collaborate in developing technologies for Internet logistics, food safety tracking, tracing and supervision management.
Upon the signing of the agreements, Shenzhen Mayor Mr. Wang Rong remarked that a closer cooperation between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, on government and community levels, is the common wish shared by the people and the governments of both cities.
Mr Wang led a delegation of senior Shenzhen officials to visit HKU on Sunday (November 29). The delegation was briefed on the University's history and development plan. Mr Wang wished to see further cooperation with HKU at all levels.
